Sorry this post is so late. Crazy week. The first original this episode was “The Letter,” performed by Lee DeWyze and almost certainly meant as a tribute to the great Alex Chilton, who had died just a few days before. “The Letter,” originally by the Box Tops Other originals below the fold! I usually try to write a quick couple of paragraphs ahead of these results show recaps. This week, I went a little nuts, so I spun my introduction into a separate post. Despite the thoughts expressed in that post, last night was a little rough. Paige Miles provided a Master’s Class in bad singing, which had [...] I’m just going to jump right into it this week after a forgettable episode. Each contestant’s previous rank is in parenthesis after their name. 1. Siobhan Magnus (1) – Siobhan still was one of the best of the night even though it was her worst performances in a while. That’s impressive. 2. Michael Lynche (3) – Big [...] Another week, and we continue to separate the wheat from the chaff, but there’s still a lot of chaff left. You heard me, Idols! I called you chaff! Deal with it! Anyway, the performances on the whole continue to be underwhelming, with only a few standouts. Here’s my cumulative power ranking after last night’s performances. Not a [...] No huge jumps this week, but some serious shuffling. Michael Lynche. Big Mike reclaims the top spot by picking a good song and nailing it. Was it the most creative choice? No. But it was a better choice than Siobhan or Crystal, who I would guess are considered by most (along with Mike) to comprise the [...] Tonight’s theme was originally going to be teen idols, which had some intriguing possibilities–I was hoping Siobhan Magnus would cover “The Letter” in honor of the late Alex Chilton. For some reason, they changed it to the much less interesting Billboard #1 hits. Someone could still sing “The Letter” but it’s much less likely now. [...] Here are the original Rolling Stones versions of the songs performed on the Top Twelve show. Because of the quality of the songs, this makes for a good little mixtape. Enjoy. Videos below the fold! Greetings all, and welcome to the results show. Last night’s show was surprisingly good, with only two performers indisputably laying eggs. That makes this part easy: Who Should be in the Bottom Three Tim Urban, for the sin of missing the point of a song with lyrics as unsubtle as “Under My Thumb.” For the most part, last night didn’t so much shuffle things around as solidify trends. Siobhan is trending upward, Andrew is trending downward. However, three of the most derided candidates–Paige, Aaron, and Katie–put in surprisingly solid performances.
